Dear Friends,
I just wanted to share with you my new acquisition. Without further ado here's the unboxing and some initial thoughts thereafter.
Always a good sight to see. A Fedex box on my ceremonial brown leather couch.
Well protected for its long journey
Im sure youre inference skills have already led you to believe there will be Zenith content
The accessories...
The watch - A 38mm El Primero original 1969 on bracelet
">
Lots of stickers for protection. Kids, be safe and wrap it up
An obligatory quick wrist shot
Some reflections off of the dial
A side profile to show off its nice curves and the box crystal that is reminiscent (rather imitative) of good old plexi.
As some of you may know, I own the Striking 10th, which I'm in the process of selling. While I love the 1/10th of a second chronograph I found the lugs on that model to be too long - the Striking 10th wears larger than my JLC Polaris 68 due to the lugs.
However, I fell for the dial and specifically the tricolour subdials. With the highly polished indexes and hands, the dial just shines! In fact, I dare say that in my humble collection, this dial stands out the most. As such, I was intrigued when the El Primero 1969 in 38mm came out.
I eventually decided on said watch with a bracelet. My own preference is for 40mm diameter watches and the Zenith without the bracelet (ie. with leather deployment) just looked too small on my wrist. The bracelet solved that issue as it gives a bigger presence to the watch. For me, the dimensions are just perfect - not overly large, not overly small. Goldilocks would be proud!
Some initial thoughts on the overall design. I love vintage tributes and reiterations, and this watch fits the bill perfectly. Regarding the design, the date at 4:30 works well; it doesn't upset the balance at all. Nicholas would approve (....?) As for the subdials, they are overlapping and I do have to admit that it is difficult to make out the elapsed minutes counter for the chronograph for times reading between 15-20 min. The bracelet is a butterfly/double-fold and quality is very nice. The bracelet is held together by a pin + screw system. The PCLs work for this watch, but they are finger print and smudge magnets! Ah well, sometimes you can't have your cake and eat to too.
Hope to enjoyed this post. I'll hopefully get some time to compare the Striking 10th to this version.
Cheers,
Cholack
