Dufour indeed is hitting on an important issue, important to watch afficionados, who as you point out, think that Zenith makes two calibers, while JLC makes thousands and thousands of completely different calibers. Both claims aren't right. Just as Zenith works with base calibers so does JLC and the others. And in 165 years Zenith surely has produced more than 2 calibers, and it's good for Dufour to discuss that and to position Zenith sqaurely as being on the same level as JLC and as its competitor.

Should they have given more names to their calibers? I would say no. I think Zenith is unique in that regard, that it has relatively well known names for its movements. I can't think of anyone else at this moment who has a movement with a name. But then, "El Primero" doesn't really designate a caliber. It used to be their name for chronograph, until Dufour decided to ruin that too. Just as Rolex has these ridiculous names for common watch features. I wonder if Rolex got it from Zenith? "El Primero" is a powerful name for Zenith, to start calling Flyback El Primeros something else would dilute the brand.

The issue of movements and calibers is so technical, that naming them all would be challenging, and perhaps somewhat pointless as the wast majority of watch shoppers aren't all that informed. But, in their marketing, Zenith should inlude the number of the movement for every watch featured "Zenith Striking 10th...El Primero 4052" for example, just to point out that there are lots of El Primeros.

More than 500 inhouse calibers ...

I quote Mr Dufour : 'We plan to share a broad range of aspects relating to our company: its 146 years of history, its legendary watches, the saga of El Primero and of course some of the other 500 different in-house made calibres' I knew there were a lot o...

Well, there were some excellent chronometer movements, if I am not wrong, such as the Cal 135, which is a hell of a movement. Yes, I too was surprised to read that Zenith claimed to have made 500 movements. I thought they made much less, but, on another s...

that Zenith produced some of the best pocket watch and deck chronometer calibers in terms of chronometry wins and placings between the 1920s and 1960s, apart from excellent wristwatch calibers such as the cal. 133.8, cal. 120, cal. 126 and of course the l...

I, too, think that the "El Primero" name has been used inflationally, to the effect that Zenith is identified with a single movement only. In my opinion, the "El Primero" designation should be used where it makes sense, that means, where a movement is use...
