Zenith Coffee House Tales (ix): Zenith is on the road again... (Captain Central Seconds Elite)

Oct 07, 2014,06:43 AM

This week's edition of our Zenith coffee house tales present a very limited edition of the Zenith Captain Elite created especially on the occasion of the Saalbach Classic Rally, a vintage car event in the region of the Hohe Tauern mountains in Austria:

"Saalbach-Classic Rally is a unique event in one of the most beautiful alpine regions in Austria. The mountains around Saalbach offer everything an ambitious Rally driver may wish for.

Meeting a World Champion? No problem. President of Saalbach-Classic Rally is double World Rally Champion Walter Roehrl from Germany. A four time winner of Rally Monte Carlo, a Master of driving on the edge. Nothing of outstanding speed will be needed for Saalbach-Classic. It is a regularity event held over three days. The route will cover more than 650 kilometres with approximately 25 Regularity Stages. Great names will be on the entry list. Lagonda, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Bugatti, BMW, Invicta, Riley, Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Veritas, Austin Healey, Fiat, Maserati, Rolls Royce – incredible cars from a time gone by." [Press Kit]

Zenith is proud sponsor and 'friend' of the rally, and thus created a very tastefully done commemorative watch, based upon the elegant Captain Elite Central Seconds, a 40mm steel watch with a 'smoked' dial...

... featuring a small twist on the bottom part:

Overall, a striking watch with a marvellous anthracite 'smoked' dial, accentuated by a fine sunburst decoration.

The real treat (or distraction, according tastes) is the tiny but very well detailed logo of the Rally:

On the backside a reassuring view on the well-known Elite 670 movement, a clockwork that many of us have seen in acute danger of extinction. Thanks God, the winds have changed...

But Zenith did not simply support the event with a purpose-made watch (and supposedly some financial contribution ;-)), Zenith contributed also in kind with its own car, and Alfa Romeo Bertone GT 1300 Junior, curtesy of Alexander Seidl, CEO of Zenith Austria & Eastern Europe.

Very nicely done 'branding'...

Thus, the wrist shots have some very tasty props this time...

Bottom line:

Not the most spectacular watch, but one with a slight twist which is tastefully integrated into the overall design. The watch itself is a proven classic with proportions to match.

Its driven by a venerable and very precise movement which already has its place in watchmaking history due to the fact that this was the first movement ever to be created using CAD techniques. Its great that Zenith decided to continue its production!

Thanks for reading!
Magnus

Our venue:
No, this is not a Viennese coffee house of any sorts. We met at a beautiful day outside at Vienna's most famous Prater, the oldest amusement park in the world. Note the distinctive Ferris wheel in the back!

I really like this classic and timeless design! :) Here I also find the toned dial nice. I am normally not a big fan of toned dials. Very nice! Thank you for sharing. Best Blomman
